Pearls of Wisdom
For the Graduate Starting College
By Shirley Perich
ISBN- 0-8254-3559-5
Kregel Publications
Our rating is 2 out of 5 on our rating scale
This very small book is a gift book for the student going on to college after graduation from high school. The writer shares some witty thoughts and some serious reflections for the students. Frankly we would recommend you purchase a better-written book for the student. This book is just too “cute” for the person needing encouragement. We feel we could write a better gift book with no effort at all.
Pearls of Wisdom
For the Family of Two Soon to be three
ISBN 0-8254-3558-7
By Shirley Perich
Rating of 2
A bit better than its sister books this gift book is a charming little gift for expectant parents to be. Real life thoughts for parents to be. Nothing special but a good idea as far as it goes, which isn’t far. This is just a so-so book that we feel the author could have done better on if she had tried.
Pearls of Wisdom
Heaven: It’s a Party and You’re Invited
ISBN 0-8254-3561-7
By Shirley Perich
Rating 1 on a scale of 5
First of all the name of the book is offensive to the average Christian. What in the world do people think heaven is about? It’s about worship and adoration of the Lord God Almighty. It seems to us that the writer did a rush job on this little gift book. Heaven is not a country club atmosphere and we won’t be having a party!
Just Jesus and Me
Devotions for Boys and Girls
By Nina Smit
ISBN 0-8254-7247-4
Candlebooks
Rating 4
This devotional type book is for boys and girls. It contains some well-written examples of God’s work among us as you read through 126 stories. There are 60 Old Testament stories and 66 New Testament stories written with practical application for children.
The illustrations are well done and many of them are as cute as can be. We especially appreciate:
Think carefully, featuring things to think about in how the Biblical story applies today.
Read, which is a short and easy to read section.
What God wants me to know, which can be shared with the parent, or the child can do independently
What I say to God, which includes a short prayer.
Get this one for a family devotional or for your children to read before bedtime each night.
Stories For a Teen’s Heart
Encourage a Teen’s Soul
Compiled by Alice Gray
ISBN 1-57673-646-6
Multnomah Books
Rated 4 on our scale from 1-5. A good read for teens.
This 323-page book is a welcome dose of warm sunlight on a cold winter’s day. Many stories that teens can read and identify with easily. We think this book is a finely written effort by Alice Gray and she is to be applauded for her sensitivity to teens.
Praying the Attributes of God

We rate this book a 5 on the scale of 1-5
Yes indeed, we do find books every now and then that rate a 5 on our scale. The writer knows her stuff and knows how to get directly to the heart of the matter; spiritual growth. The book is well researched, the Scriptures and ideas are meaningful and if you will read and re-read this book you will experience spiritual growth. Some of the topics covered are God as Creator, eternal, faithful, Father, Accessible and 18 more topics.

31 Days to Living as a New Believer
By R. Larry Moyer
0-8254-3172-7
Kregel Publications
This book rates a 3+ on our scale of 1-5
A very good book for new and growing Christians. This book will help to acquaint them with the basics of the Christian life. This book is very helpful and filled with essential truths for new believers. We especially like the way the book is laid out. It is easy to read, has a lot of practical truth and insight and is very informative. It is broken down into 31 days of devotional type studies. There is a read section for you to read basics of the devotional, a consider section for the reader to ponder the ideas they have read, and other information on how to mediated and pray to God for guidance each day. We think almost any Christian would appreciate having a copy of this book.
The Virgin Birth
By Robert Grimalkin
Kregel Books
ISBN 0-8254-2746-0
This book rates a 3+ on our scale of 1-5
This is a biblical study on the deity of Christ. There are few books on the subject of the virgin birth that are easy to comprehend but this one has that distinction. A well thought out, organized and prepared study covering the essentials and basics every Christian needs to know. For those who are seeking to know Christ we would recommend this book as a book that helps explains some of those difficult and misunderstood truths about Christ as Lord and Savior and Son of God.
The Veritas Conflict
A novel of Spiritual warfare
By Shaunti Feldhahn
ISBN 1-57673-708-x
Multnomah
This book earns a 3 rating on the scale of 1-5
Believe it or not dear reader there are plenty of good Christian fiction books around. This story concerns the spiritual trials and tribulation of Claire Rives as she attends Harvard. She is surprised by some of the spiritual encounters she runs into and how her faith is tested. This is a book that every reader can learn something from and we think it makes pretty nice reading.

This is another great little book about Earl the Emu who lives on the farm and his friends on the Berry farm. Learning that God has made each and every one of us as special as can be, we see the residence of the little town of Sunnyville are ready to teach us some valuable lessons. Earl sees his reflection in the creek and stops to stare at himself. Earl, the Berry's grandson, start talking about how each and everyone is special in the eyes of God. Sometimes we don't feel like we belong with the others in our crowd, and that's the way this pair feels about the farm animals.
Even when you don't feel like you fit in with those around you because you look different, act different, or others make fun of you there is an important message in this book: "Cheer up, Earl!" said Jason. "We all belong to God and that means more than what we look like. It doesn't matter anyway what we look like; God wants us to belong to Him." That is a message every child and adult needs to hear - God loves us and wants us.

EARL THE EMU

Jason like visiting his grandparents farm. On this particular visit to the farm Farmer Berry told his wife and Jason that he had a special surprise for them. Carrying forth the theme, "God has a purpose for those who are different," we see Earl the emu hanging his head out of the trailer as Farmer Berry turns into the driveway of the farm.
Earl is a diferent kind of bird and is different from the other birds. Earl has his feelings hurt by the other farm yard animals because he just doesn't seem to be like the rest of the barnyard animals. All of the teasing and making fun of Earl stops when Little Max, one of the barnyard's chicks falls into the pond. A daring rescue takes place as Earl risks his neck to save the little guy.
There is a happy ending to this book and a lesson to be learned by the small reader in your family; God makes each of us different for a reason. Understanding that we are all different and can do different things is a valuable lesson for the reader and the listeners of this fine book.

The Evangelism Mandate
By David L. Larsen
Kregel Academic and Professional Books
ISBN – 0-8254-3089-5
3 + on our scale of 1-5
This is a scholarly book written for today’s theologian. It gives careful and precise attention to a variety of topics. The author states the purpose of God, “From start to finish, from beginning to ending, conversion is the work of God.” It deals with whom God is and why we need to know Him on a true and personal manner. Although the book is written from a theological perspective, the layperson can benefit greatly from it.
For too long there have been those among us who think that evangelism is a streamlined program or process to bring others to the saving knowledge of Christ as Lord and Savior. One of the more practical benefits to the reader is the understanding that God takes His time with people. Better to take time and learn of the need for personal repentance than to rush forward and make a hasty decision to follow Christ. For the most part people have not understood that the Holy Spirit awakens guilt within us and shows us a need for genuine repentance. Once we realize that becoming a Christian is more than giving lip service to Him, and comprehend that believing and following Christ is a life long commitment to walk in the footprints of Jesus then conversion of the soul takes place.
This book gives special attention to evangelism and revival, church growth, evangelistic preaching, the invitation and so much more. Included in this book are some classic gospel sermons by some of the greatest preachers of the last two centuries. This book awakens a spirit of understanding that evangelism is not creating numbers of persons to be added to the roll of some church, but is a definite lifestyle of revealing all of mankind as the sinners we are, but for those who believe, the sacrificial blood of Christ redeems us.

100 New Testament
Sermon Outlines
By
John Phillips
Kregel Publications
ISBN 0-8254-3482-3
5 Our best rating
Not only is this pastoral help book fantastic for preparing sermons it can also be adapted for individual study and edification. This collection of outlines not only can be used by anyone who is wanting to develop a sermon or talk, but for those who say they don’t know how to study the scriptures.
For instance, one of our favorites is outline number 40 The Early Church in Action. This outline is based on the teachings of Acts 2:38-47. After a brief comment about the subject matter the author takes a careful look at believers in the early church –
Outlined for our consideration and study are :
Saved by Faith
Separated by Baptism
Sound in Doctrine
Strong in Fellowship
Simple in Worship
Steadfast in Prayer
Sanctified in Life
Sold on the Gospel
Singing from the Heart
And Successful in Witness
The author points out that the early Christians had no great cathedrals in which to worship, no rituals, no rigid liturgies, no elaborate services, etc. And yet, the power of the Holy Spirit moved among the people in a magnificent manner. The notes in these outlines are though provoking and moving. We would do well to remember the simplicity of the worship in early times and remember that worship comes from the heart and not by the persons and things around us.

REVOLUTION IN WORLD MISSIONS
By
K.P. Yohannan
GFA Books
ISBN 1-56599-991-6
4+
This book is a must read for Christians around the world. If you ever wondered how affective missions work is then you must read this book. We are especially impressed with the loving dedication and sacrifices of the author. When we hear persons speak of having a heart for missions we overlook the depth of that commitment. Somehow, most of us think of missions as a far off venture by a church. This book puts into clear and lasting perspective that each and every one of us is a mission.
Dr. Yohannan is founder and director of Gospel for Asia. He is one, among many responsible for the equipping and training of young persons to go into the country side and in the city to share the gospel of Christ. This book will leave you with a heart that burns not only to give to missions but to be an active part of reaching the lost for Christ.
Ah, that we would have a heart for missions like this man has. It stirs the heart when a man so dedicated to the work of God tells us how much we have and how little others have around the world. Denying himself the luxuries that most of us take for granted, this man shows us what living for Christ really means.

We believe each and every Christian needs to know which books, videos, and what music is acceptable to our brothers and sisters in Christ. It really does matter what we watch and read and where we go for everything we do reflects Christ at work in our lives. There is an old saying in the Christian community that still goes on 2002 - "Christian don't do anything you think Jesus Christ wouldn't do for His Spirit lives within each and every Christian.
